BUILDING CONSTRUCTION 2

This subject aims to introduce structures as architecture by developing an understanding of the structural systems in construction technology in a unique way in relation to historical and innovative buildings.
The teaching objectives of the module are to :
- Develop an understanding of the structural systems in construction and its application in the building construction.
- Identify and apply knowledge of load and forces in analyzing structural possibilities in the structural systems as part of the construction process.
Project 1

PROJECT 1 : Skeletal Construction ( Temporary Bus Shelter )

Experiencing and understanding skeletal construction is important as it is one of the most wisely used structures for building support. As a designer, we should know how skeletal structure works.

The objectives of this project are to :

- To create an understanding of skeletal structure and its relevant structural components.

- To understand how a skeletal structure reacts under loading.

- To demonstrate a convincing understanding oh how skeletal construction works.

- To be able to manipulate skeletal construction to solve an oblique design problem.

In a group of five, we are required to construct a temporary bus shelter according to scale, construction and form.

REFLECTION

From this project, I learned how to recognize the implication of construction systems in design. Besides, I learned that it is important to always communicate without team members to avoid misunderstanding.

PROJECT 2 : Understanding Forces in Building Construction

Project 2

A building normally comprises of several different types of constructional systems, either due to its function or building code requirements. As designers, it is very important that us to understand when and where each of the different type of constructional system is used.

Today, tensile and grid shell construction methods are becoming wisely used structures for building support.

For this project, we selected Korkeasaari Lookout Tower, known as Helsinki Zoo Lookout tower.

REFLECTION

Through this project, I was able to identify the functional requirements of the construction systems. Not only that, I can identify construction members and joints. In this module, I had learned that work distribution is important to complete the projects.
